Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA's):

It is possible to complete part of an Apprenticeship while you are still at school (in Years 11 and 12). In an Australian School Based Apprenticeship, you complete part of your Apprenticeship part time and complete your Senior Secondary Certificate as well. You would normally work with your host employer for at least 8 hours per week, plus some time in the school holidays.

As an school based apprentice, you get:

* a job

* free training

* ongoing advice and support

* a training wage

* a Senior Secondary Certificate

* a nationally recognised qualification

To be eligible for an ASBA you will need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand passport holder resident for more than 6 months and enter into a training contract with an ACT employer.

You will also need to be:

* at least 15 years of age

* enrolled in school

* have the ASBA qualification recognised on your school certificate

* combine part time work with an employer and structured, industry approved training while attending school

* continue employment and on/off the job training throughout the year including some school holidays

* complete a minimum of 11 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week towards your Australian Apprenticeship if undertaking a Certificate II qualification - this usually includes 8 hours of work and 3 hours per week of structured training

* complete a minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week towards your Australian Apprenticeship if undertaking a Certificate III qualification - this usually includes 12 hours of work and 3 hours per week of structured training
